The value of the k-9 unit
  • Canines provide an invaluable benefit in helping officers locate suspects who flee crimes and to protect their handlers from harm.

  • They are a vital help for searching and evidence location as canines have the ability to smell 100,000 times stronger than a human.

  • Canines are also ambassadors of the department, appearing at special events for protective and also public relations purposes.

    k-9 unit history
  • Retired Police Dog Rocky and K-9 Kira, as well as the Edmonds Police Departments current canines, Hobbs and Ace were purchased as puppies by the Edmonds Police Foundation.

  • We were instrumental in securing donations for a vehicle and equipment when a second k-9 unit (Dash) was added in 2006.

  • Training and protective equipment has also been provided by donations from the Edmonds Police Foundation. The continuity of the Canine unit would not be possible without these efforts.

  • K-9 Dash retired in 2013. Hobbs is currently working the streets and serving citizens of Edmonds and its surrounding communities. The team has ongoing training in obedience, protection, apprehension, searching and evidence location.

  • Hobbs is expected to retire in the next 6 months to year and a half and we are currently fundraising for the Edmonds Police Departments future K-9 puppy.
